The growth rate of seaports over the past time has been quite slow, the lowest in the past few years is putting businesses in a difficult situation.

Just trying not to fall deep.

The growth rate of cargo volume through seaports has been slowing down during the past time. Even in two specially classified seaport areas, Hai Phong port and Ba Ria - Vung Tau port, the growth is also quite sluggish.

GOOD THROUGH SEAPORTS DECREASED SHARPLY, BUSINESSES FACED DIFFICULTIES

In Hai Phong, statistics of Hai Phong Maritime Port Authority show that in 2021, the volume of goods through Hai Phong seaport area will reach 91.7 million tons, up 8% compared to 2020. In which, container cargo volume reached 63.9 million tons, up 9% compared to 2020.

However, in the first 9 months of 2022, the volume of goods through the seaport area of this city reached 70.6 million tons, up only 2.2% over the same period in 2021. In which, container cargo volume reached 49.7 million tons, up nearly 4% over the same period in 2021.

Particularly in September 2022, cargo output had a better growth when reaching 7.4 million tons, up5.6% compared to September 2021. In which, container cargo reached 5.2 million tons.

In the Ba Ria-Vung Tau seaport area, data from Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority said: The volume of goods through the seaport in the first 9 months of 2022 is estimated at 83.9 million tons, down 4% over the same period in 2021.

The volume of container cargo passed by ship was estimated at 26.3 million tons, up 2%. In particular, the total number of ships passing through the port decreased, estimated at 14,463, down 10% over the same period in 2021.

According to General Secretary of Vietnam Seaport Association Ho Kim Lan, despite their efforts, the ability to achieve breakthroughs is not easy. "The growth rate of seaports reaching 2-3% this year is satisfactory, just try not to reduce deeply," Lan said.

SSI Research's port and shipping industry update report recently forecasts that the situation of the shipping market is rapidly deteriorating according to the global economic trend.

For domestic transport, due to the impact of the "Zero Covid" policy in China, cargo output has decreased by 2.6% over the same period in the first 8 months of 2022. Domestic freight rates have also decreased by 5-10% in the third quarter of 2022.

However, SSI Research forecasts that freight volume will improve by the end of the year, which may cause current freight rates to be maintained in the fourth quarter of 2022.
